Hey Ya'll

Just signed up today. So far everything seems great. I'm glad that there is actual discussions going on unlike some of the other websites who go for jokes and puns to get points. I've made a few tribes (love the name by the way) if anyone is interested in Ohio State or vinyl. I can't wait for this place to start picking up some steam.

A little about myself. I grew up in Ohio and went to Ohio State for agronomy. Moved to Kansas for a little bit doing research on corn and how they react to the drought. Now I'm back in Ohio as an agronomist now. I enjoy making beer and sampling bourbon. Huge fan of college football and womens curling.

Welcome to the site dude, great to have you. You should definitely link your "tribes" by putting a /t/ infront of the name so people can check em out. To clarify science would be /t/science (it auto links too!). Looking forward to your posts/discussions., personally I know a few people that are into college football on here, so I'm sure you will encounter their ramblings soon enough :D BTW, you gotta join the /t/booze tribe, if you're into beer making and bourbon!

can you tell me in a couple sentences what it means to major in agronomy? I can guess, and I can google, but I'd like to hear it in basic terms.

Basically they teach us what plants need, I specialized in row crops, and what they will look like if they don't get a certain nutrient. They also teach you the entire plant growing cycle and the science behind how CO2, O2, and H2O make sugars and cause the plant to grow. I also learned how certain styles of herbicides work by disrupting a different piece of the plant. We had to learn how GMO's are made both the natural way and the accelerated way. I ad to take classes on ID-ing weeds and fungi, and learn how the fungi grow and what conditions they like the most. We learned about fertilizer and proper use and the problems that can come if too much fertilizer is used. I also had to take a few soil classes and can now name dirt by just feel and taste alone. They really get into the science behind plants, a lot more then all my engineer and pre-med friends thought.

that sounds like it's quite valuable. I do have one concern though. Does all that knowledge take the fun out of having your own home garden?

It sounds like it's geared towards commercial farming.
