can you tell me in a couple sentences what it means to major in agronomy? I can guess, and I can google, but I'd like to hear it in basic terms.

Basically they teach us what plants need, I specialized in row crops, and what they will look like if they don't get a certain nutrient. They also teach you the entire plant growing cycle and the science behind how CO2, O2, and H2O make sugars and cause the plant to grow. I also learned how certain styles of herbicides work by disrupting a different piece of the plant. We had to learn how GMO's are made both the natural way and the accelerated way. I ad to take classes on ID-ing weeds and fungi, and learn how the fungi grow and what conditions they like the most. We learned about fertilizer and proper use and the problems that can come if too much fertilizer is used. I also had to take a few soil classes and can now name dirt by just feel and taste alone. They really get into the science behind plants, a lot more then all my engineer and pre-med friends thought.

that sounds like it's quite valuable. I do have one concern though. Does all that knowledge take the fun out of having your own home garden?

It sounds like it's geared towards commercial farming.
