What's the punishment generally dished out on students who make these threats?

I am not sure. In my sons school's case she is being charged with making the threat and vandalism. But the police and school officials are not saying what the punishment is or the name of the student due to the fact that she is only 16. My guess is that if her parents are poor she will jet juvenile detention and community service, if her parents are rich she will get a minimum amount of community service and mental health counseling because "It was just a prank yo!" That is pretty much how it works down here.

I guess it's tough to find a middle ground when it comes to an effective punishment/deterrent that doesn't ruin a kid's life if they choose to embrace their immature / stupid side. Definitely a tough call.

I really don't know what the punishment should be. If it's to light then it becomes a joke and a badge of honor to some kids. To harsh and the kid will not be able to come back from it. I do think that they have to start using the punishment as a deterrent so that the kids understand the trouble they will get into.

School suspensions here for sure and court dates. if under the age of 18 we do not hear of the punishments from juvenile court.

Just what I expected, it's pretty much the same here.
