I don't know about an app, but I know a mobile version of the site is in the works but with no launch date. Generally its really a question of when the site will have enough traction to warrant the development of a mobile app/site. This place have zero exterior funding, no ads, and generally no income outside of what is being put in on a personal level (development time and hosting costs). I think the best thing that can be done right now is to share this place around, the more traction this place gets the easier it will get to support a project of this size.
In terms of gaining traction (and raising funds) wouldn't it make more sense to remove the invite only system? I see the merits of that in it might filter out certain kinds of spam and undesirable users, but if your long-term goal is to generate revenue, it might be beneficial to make it open to more people! Just a thought!
Where can I volunteer my efforts? I have 5 years responsive web design experience and I would love to know where to direct any questions on how I can help.
Overall, for a site like this, responsive is the way to go, and the time to market and overall cost are much less than app development, not to mention future proofing.

Makes sense. Guess I'll make do with the mobile version for a while :)
