When Choice Doesn’t Matter: An essay on game storytelling and choice in favor of player immersion over gameplay
Walking into The Banner Saga 2, I had a rough idea of what to expect; hard choices, beautiful music and lovely hand-drawn art to frame a sad story. I'd played the first game in the series and was certain that I'd remembered it well enough to know what to expect from its sequel. The trouble is, I'd forgotten something important about the first game: my choices didn't always matter- and that made the experience more meaningful.

Terraria has sold over 20m copies
2D sandbox game Terraria has crossed the 20m sales threshold, developer Re-Logic has announced. While Terraria's been around since May 2011 on PC, the game's scope has grown such that it still amassed 8.5m of those sales in the last 18 months (since version 1.3 launched on PC). One reason for this is that Terraria has expanded to be on a tonne of platforms. These days you can acquire the mining and crafting game on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, Vita, PS4, 3DS, Wii U, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Amazon mobile devices, in addition to the usual PC/Mac/Linux versions.

The 5 Most Exciting Upcoming Indie Switch Games
Nintendo's latest console, the Switch, is set to be released on March 3, 2017- one of the biggest criticism's of Nintendo's yet-to-be released console has thus far been its rather sparse launch lineup. While The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild certainly looks incredible, the other games teased, while they look fun, don't seem to be big system sellers. Nintendo is painfully aware of this, and has turned to showcasing its indie games- they released a video showing off some of the indie games coming to the system, and they’ve announced that over sixty indie games are on track to be released in 2017. Here are five games worth checking.

An Interactive Political Thriller – Interview with the Developer of The Occupation
You may have heard of White Paper Games; they're a small England-based game studio responsible for the adventure Ether One, which was a gorgeous first person game about restoring the memories of a dementia patient. In their new game, The Occupation, you play as a journalist and whistleblower in England during the 1980s; in the wake of a terrorist attack, a new law- The Union Act- has been drafted, and it seems as though it will curtail the civil liberties of the population in exchange for a measure of safety. As a journalist, it's your job to report on it- what will be your narrative? That's for you to decide in The Occupation.

The indie games are too damn cheap
An average indie title these days is priced $8.72 on Steam. During the last Summer Sale the price went down to the mind-boggling $4.63 and yet the average sales are at their lowest at 21,000 copies. Small indie titles usually have a smaller audience save for a few outliers. The problem with our approach is that people seem to normalize extremely successful breakout hits while assuming everything that didn’t sell north of a million copies is a complete failure.
