Trending shows "trending" stuff because the new stuff isn't trending and so it doesn't show up on top. If you would like to see the new posts, just click on "new". When the new posts gain traction, they will climb the trending list very quickly. I think the system works well as is, unless I'm missing something.
Since any time you move around the site your preference changes back to "trending" it's easy to miss the new stuff. I've requested to the admins that they allow the site to remember our sorting preference so I don't have to keep resorting everywhere I go.
This would be a great option. I also prefer to sort by Newest and I'm always surprised when I go to my front page and see something with dozens of upvotes before I remember.
