Sony says you can't have cross-play because PlayStation is the best
Sony doesn't want you to play with your Xbox or Switch friends, I argued last June. We've known since 2016 that Sony is the only company standing in the way of buddies being able to team up across PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC, since there's no technological limitation. And though Sony has since been shown up by Microsoft and Nintendo, and though Sony enraged the Fortnite community, and though Fallout developer Bethesda has badmouthed Sony about cross-play and threatened to hold another game hostage, and even though PlayStation America CEO Shawn Layden suggested...

It's Time for Video Game Makers to Unionize
Once considered a trifle (at best) or an escapist vice (at worst), video games are in fact big business. Huge, really: the video game industry was worth $108 billion in 2017, according to Superdata Research — around one-quarter of the value of the overall software industry. The creators of the video game hits today have little in common with their forebears: Myst, the best-selling video game of the 1990s, was created by the brothers Rand and Robyn Miller with help from five friends.

While Playstation 4 is a really good console, it doesn’t help if you’re Xbox Community Manager.

New 'Alien: Isolation' Prototype Footage Reveals It Was Originally A Third-Person Game
Alien: Isolation is one of the best horror games this generation, despite a laundry-list of issues. That said, apparently it was almost entirely a different game. Alien: Isolation released back in 2014 as a first-person survival horror game from Creative Assembly and Sega. The game was praised -- and criticized -- for many things, but it was perhaps the game's atmosphere and the tension it creates that won over the most. And the game's first-person perspective was key to both of these things.

Blizzard’s trying to clean up Twitch chat by tying it to Battle.net accounts
Since the earliest days of the Overwatch League, Blizzard has had a tough time getting fans, and even pro players, to behave themselves in Twitch chat. Hennig: "Things are clearly not working the way they used to"
Amy Hennig has been in the industry a while now, long enough to earn a Lifetime Achievement Award. Over the course of her career, nearly everything about the job has changed. But speaking with GamesIndustry.biz before accepting that honor at last month's DICE Summit in Las Vegas, Hennig says there is at least one constant in game development, namely human nature. In her estimation, the big challenge any team faces will stem from "human beings being human beings."

Mighty fall of grace, particularly considering SuperData believes Apex Legends had the strongest start for a free-to-play title of all time.

This Year's Steam Summer Sale Was A Mess, Game Developers Say
This year’s Grand Prix-themed Steam summer sale was a bumpy ride, to say the least. Two weeks ago, Valve apologized and altered the sale’s meta game—in which players join teams and “race” against each other for prizes—after players found it unbalanced and confusing, and developers suffered a bloodbath of sudden wishlist deletions. Now, with the sale winding down, it seems that Valve’s efforts weren’t enough to undo the damage the confusing sale structure did to indie developers.
