    its not as much a country's defense mechanism against other countries, as it is the government and elite's defense mechanism against its own people. In any country the military and intelligence agencies official purposes are only to defend against outside threats - also in North Korea. In many countries on their way to or deeply within tyranny - those functions have taken on additional responsibilities against "internal threats" and more and more just against any opposition.

      I can agree that it has the possibility to be used towards its own people - but can we really say that it is currently used in this way? I feel like the American people are generally not giving a vote of confidence to the ones they elected to represent them, and this mistrust can cause severe problems if it lashes out into becoming an international scandal.

      (I really don't believe what I'm saying but I feel like it's what any politician would say)
