The NSA is actually a good thing for America, and Edward Snowden did the wrong thing by revealing it
Giving away free information about a country's defense mechanism to others in the world is a serious offense.

He didn't sell/give it away to other countries, but to the people.
Are you really expecting me to believe that other countries won't take advantage of the knowledge that he has provided? If I was a conspiracy nutcase I would say that it might not be a coincidence that Russia decided to attack Ukraine shortly after Snowden had been given protection by the Russian state. They might have found out something about the Americans that they feel like they can exploit to their advantage.
its not as much a country's defense mechanism against other countries, as it is the government and elite's defense mechanism against its own people. In any country the military and intelligence agencies official purposes are only to defend against outside threats - also in North Korea. In many countries on their way to or deeply within tyranny - those functions have taken on additional responsibilities against "internal threats" and more and more just against any opposition.
I can agree that it has the possibility to be used towards its own people - but can we really say that it is currently used in this way? I feel like the American people are generally not giving a vote of confidence to the ones they elected to represent them, and this mistrust can cause severe problems if it lashes out into becoming an international scandal.
(I really don't believe what I'm saying but I feel like it's what any politician would say)
