North Carolina Coach Dean Smith left every letterman he coached $200 in his will
Legendary former North Carolina men’s basketball coach Dean Smith, who died Feb. 7, loved his players as much as he loved the game. Amazingly, he’s even managed to demonstrate this posthumously by sending each of his letter winners a check for $200 with the message, “Enjoy dinner out compliments of Coach Dean Smith.” A tweet showing a photograph of one of the letters, addressed to Tar Heels 1993 championship team member Dante Calabria, went viral on Thursday.

Known as “the Big Cat,” the 6’5″ forward made his league debut in October 1950, playing for the Washington Capitals. The First Death of an Athlete
For the majority of his 18-year NBA career Steve Nash was a better basketball player than anyone had expected him to be. The wiry, soft-spoken, 6’3” Canadian—diminutive by League standards—was drafted with little fanfare out of the small collegiate program at Santa Clara, the only Division 1 school that offered him a scholarship. Nash remained in the league’s proverbial trenches for much of his first four seasons.

How HS Hoops Game Combined for 2 Points
Brandon Rutledge couldn't take his eyes off the scoreboard in the gym at Brookwood High School. A 6'8" junior on the Bibb County basketball team, Rutledge had just played every minute of the game. Yet he felt as fresh as he had before the opening tip, and his uniform didn't have a drip of sweat on it—even though he had scored every single point in the game.

This Guy's Quest to Track Every Shot in the NBA Changed Basketball Forever
As a kid, Kirk Goldsberry was a rabid basketball fan. But this was the 1980s, and living near Penn State meant his house wasn't quite close enough to Philadelphia to get 76ers games on TV. And so, casting about for a team, he latched on to Dominique Wilkins and the Atlanta Hawks. They were 750 miles away, but through the magic of superstation TBS, Goldsberry could follow them as if he himself hailed from Georgia.
