I totally mean no disrespect to your taste in usernames or anything, but the ghoti argument annoys me to no end. Yes, gh can be pronounced as an f, but only when used at the end of certain words. Yes, ti can be pronounced as sh, but only when used in cases such as "perdition" or "motion," where it must also be accompanied by an o and n. The rules may be complicated and riddled with exceptions in English, but they are there. As a lover of English and language in general, it just irks me to see aspects of a language taken out of context.

That said, ghoti was created solely to make a point, and it achieves it quite well, so I must give credit there. And sorry, /rant.

I didn't say the rules weren't there, just that they're absurd. There's really no reason for the rules to be so complicated and riddled with exceptions except that the language has grown organically rather than by design. In that regard there's something to be said for the efforts by French to maintain the purity of their language. ;)
