On a plane, an e-book reader is a must. Tote around an entire library with you. I normally carry a spare battery pack for my phone as well so I can read emails, text people, etc.
Can't read in a car (motion sickness), so I normally opt for a large mess of science and history podcasts instead. My phone's setup to auto-update 4-5 podcasts that I like so there's several hours of audio to listen to in case of a sudden road trip.
