I am always a passenger since I don't drive, so I play the jumping man game, where you imagine a little man jumping acrobatically around the objects passing by your window, it seems simple but it can really make the time fly by. Also a 3ds or vita helps greatly, I don't like playing games on my phone and wearing down the battery.
i love silly games like that so i'll try this jumping man one next time :D
i'd share one back but i can't think of any in particular that i do :/ Except for the car number plate swearing game. You make up a sentence with the letters on the plate as each starting letter but it has to be an insult.
Reading. Bring a good book/ereader with you, and zone out into the world between the pages of that book.
Or you can pass the time by annoying your travel partner. Play I-Spy on a plane, 'great fun'.
Or invent stories about other travelers on the same plane/bus/train/tram/trolly/horse/car. But that's only really fun if you can share them with a travel partner.
I had a 15 hours of travel time starting at 10:30pm. I was supposed to try and sleep but I ended up just finishing my entire book. I opened the book and didn't close it until I finished. Luckily I had my Kindle for more books, but I was extremely tired the next day haha!
On a plane, an e-book reader is a must. Tote around an entire library with you. I normally carry a spare battery pack for my phone as well so I can read emails, text people, etc.
Can't read in a car (motion sickness), so I normally opt for a large mess of science and history podcasts instead. My phone's setup to auto-update 4-5 podcasts that I like so there's several hours of audio to listen to in case of a sudden road trip.
Music, video games, reading. Sometimes I watch the on-flight movie if it's not terrible, and then I while the time away worrying about what they're feeding me. Flights aren't usually boring, just full of anxiety. You see, I'm one of those that gets worried that a lightning bolt will break the plane and introduce me to the wonders of parachute-free skydiving.
It depends on the company, but if I am alone, it's iPad with a few TV series loaded up and then I'll put a few music albums I can drown out to on my phone. I am not big on generating artificial small talk and palavering with "single serving friends". I think I have had "Always Sunny" Season 7 on my iPad since it came out.
Usually, I bring along my iPad for reading. Turn on a low-volume playlist on Spotify and begin to read. This is usually for just long durations like train rides or flights.
If I'm in the car I get motion sickness easily, so I just put on music and jam out. I like to have a snack or drink in the car as well, to make it feel more comfortable.
A lot of people here talk about ebooks, and yes, that's key to surviving a long flight... But I find it's not enough for those 10+-hour flights across the Pacific. What you need to survive those is sheer variety.
What I do is always bring my smartphone, loaded with the following:
- A selection of interesting but light ebooks (biographies or humor work best for this);
- Podcasts galore across a wide range of topics and tones (interviews, Radiolab-like stories, short videos, etc.);
- Short stories;
- Games.
Next, I make sure to have an USB battery pack in case my headrest charging plug doesn't work, which, if you take Air Canada, is gonna happen 50% of the time.
Last, I load my laptop with movies and TV series.
The laptop is kind of my last resort because of battery life issues. Usually I'll check out the on-board entertainment system first.
Now, with all that being said, when nothing can distract you and you just can't sleep... Meditation is your friend.
crochet, always got something on hand (and had no problems getting my hooks on a plane so far )
I get wicked motion sickness from reading and i would from crochet but i'm at the point i don't really need to look at what i'm doing all the time, just a glance now and then. So it's that or amuse myself with my imagination and inner voice.
For short trips, a full battery on my phone and lots of music. For longer trips (longer = to Ecuador for example), the aforementioned full battery, plus another charged and ready, and books. Also, since I rarely sleep 24 hours before a trip (stress, packing and repacking and stressing about what I may have forgotten to pack despite it having been checked off the list 2x), I usually sleep through a majority of the flight.

That sounds fun I'll have to try and remember that one.

My last flight was international... so I wound up reading an entire novel. Good ol' fashion paperback fantasy novel :P

Reading. I've also taken a pad and drew as well.
Kindle, music on my phone and Bose QC25.
I like podcasts games and books.
Podcasting while slouching.
