A lot of people here talk about ebooks, and yes, that's key to surviving a long flight... But I find it's not enough for those 10+-hour flights across the Pacific. What you need to survive those is sheer variety.

What I do is always bring my smartphone, loaded with the following:

    - A selection of interesting but light ebooks (biographies or humor work best for this); - Podcasts galore across a wide range of topics and tones (interviews, Radiolab-like stories, short videos, etc.); - Short stories; - Games.

Next, I make sure to have an USB battery pack in case my headrest charging plug doesn't work, which, if you take Air Canada, is gonna happen 50% of the time.

Last, I load my laptop with movies and TV series.

The laptop is kind of my last resort because of battery life issues. Usually I'll check out the on-board entertainment system first.

Now, with all that being said, when nothing can distract you and you just can't sleep... Meditation is your friend.
