Hello /t/aquariums, whats your dream fish or aquarium set-up?

I spend a lot of time daydreaming about fish and aquariums. So much so, that I often have several plans for future set-ups. I thought we could get a discussion going about what kind of tank people would love to have.

What size would it be? What inhabitants would you put in it? Any other special features?

I'll go first. My dream tank is a freshwater planted tank for a Bowfin. These fish get pretty large. A full grown adult can get on average of 20-25 inches or 50-64cm. So this tank would need to be massive. Since this is a dream tank I'll say its 300-500 gallons at least. Their ideal habitat are vegetated lowland rivers and lakes. I would plant this tank with large robust species and throw in some nice twisted driftwood. After all of that I would put in a large school of fish that I wouldn't mind the bowfin eating. Bowfin are from the US. I know recently pet stores have been stocking [Fat Head Minnows "Rosey Red Feeder Fish” (Pimephales promelas)]. These little fish are native to the same region of the US as Bowfin, are being captivity propagated, and are likely a natural prey species for Bowfin. Alright /t/aquariums, what does your dream look like?

200+ gallon lion fish, reef tank. Maybe an eel or too if possible. Long fin clows. Tons of inverts. Sorry if any of these aren't compatible this is just what I want, not what would work lol.

Hey, its a dream tank. You can imagine anything you want in it! But you are correct. A lionfish would likely try to eat any inverts/ fish that could fit in its mouth. They're such incredibly cool animals. Just an absolutely beautiful group of fishes that are fascinating to watch. I would love to have one as well. Predatory fish usually have quite a bit of personality, which is definitely true for lionfish. Feel free to join us over at /t/lionfish. There are just two members at the moment and definitely needs more content. You may be aware of this, but just for fun here is a quick lionfish fact: there are several species of lion fish, two of which are invasive to the Caribbean. My favorite lionfish is The Clear Lionfish (Pterois radiata).

Yeah. I actually live in an area that has a lionfish infestation(don't know if thats the right word lol). Its pretty cool but sad at the same time because they have to remove them somehow.

I think I would want a species only Malawi cichlid tank. Perhaps Labidochromis kimpuma or Melanochromis johanni. Right now I have a single Nimbochromis polystigma in a tank by himself because he's a big meanie and would kill anything else I put in there. I wish I had a species group with a male and a harem of females. Rift lake cichlids have big personalities that are much easier to observe when they are in groups. Of course, this would necessitate a giant tank, maybe 300 gal or so. But, we're dreaming here, right?

Yes we are dreaming, and apparently we are dreaming big! This tank sounds like it would be really cool. I really enjoy species specific tanks. This is when you get to see the truly unique behaviors and personalities of fish. And there is the potential of them spawning, which is almost always a plus. In a tank this size you could potentially have multiple males establish spawning territories. That would be cool!

Oooh! Multiple males would be awesome to watch! My favorite thing about cichlids is watching them interact with each other; battling over territory, flirting with each other, and digging out caves and stuff. Plus, possible spawning is a BIG bonus!
