No, Native Americans aren't genetically more susceptible to alcoholism
When Jessica Elm, a citizen of the Oneida Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin, was studying for her master’s degree in social work, she frequently heard about how genes were responsible for the high risk of alcoholism among American Indians. But her own family’s experience — and the research, she discovered — tells a very different story. The "firewater" fairytale that Elm came to know all too well goes like this: Europeans introduced...

Scientists In The Antarctic Are Drinking Way Too Much Booze
It’s a lonely life as a scientist stationed in the South Pole. On top of the normal pressures of work, love and life most have to deal with, workers for the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) also face chronic cabin fever, isolation, periods of 24-hour darkness and a stark snowy backdrop that could ice over the warmest of hearts. It’s perhaps no surprise that many of them turn to alcohol to chase away the Antarctic blues.

The hidden cost of your drinking habit
It's Friday, and let's face it: If you're not hungover at work this morning, you're probably wishing you were. My personal favorite hangover cure is data, and the good folks at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just dropped a pile of sobering stats this week that may help clear your head. They found out that collectively, our national drinking habit costs society $249 billion a year. That cost comes primarily from excessive drinking...

Alcohol, Blackouts, and Campus Sexual Assault
I walked across the University of Texas campus on a warm, breezy night in April, trying my best not to look too middle-aged. It had been half a lifetime since I lugged my backpack across these sidewalks as a freshman from Dallas, clad in steel-toe Doc Martens and a big flannel shirt from the men’s department because I was always looking for ways to hide and smother my vulnerability. Now I made my way to the main mall, where a modest...

A study conducted in the city of Newcastle, UK, has revealed what you always suspected. Over two-thirds of emergency room visits on weekends, especially in the wee hours of the morning, are directly related to alcohol consumption. Newcastle University health researcher Kathryn Parkinson and her colleagues examined health records from a local inner-city hospital over the 2010-11 year, looking for statistics on how many people were admitted for alcohol-related issues.

Americans are drinking themselves to death at record rates
Alcohol is killing Americans at a rate not seen in at least 35 years, according to new federal data. Last year, more than 30,700 Americans died from alcohol-induced causes, including alcohol poisoning and cirrhosis, which is primarily caused by alcohol use. In 2014, there were 9.6 deaths from these alcohol-induced causes per 100,000 people, an increase of 37 percent since 2002.
