Sober And Sold-Out: Dance Club In Sweden Cuts Booze For A Night
Breathalyzers were placed in the doorway of a nightclub in Stockholm this weekend, with an unusual purpose: to ensure no guests had been drinking alcohol. It was all part of a plan for a booze-free night out called Sober, where staff were also on the lookout for anyone who seemed to be on drugs.

My drinking years: ‘Everyone has blackouts, don’t they?’
I’m in Paris for work, which is exactly as great as it sounds. I eat dinner at a fancy restaurant and drink cognac — the booze of kings and rap stars. Somewhere near midnight, I tumble into a cab with my friend, and the night starts to stutter and skip. How did we get back so fast? I walk through the front door of my hotel, alone. It’s that time of night when every floor has a banana peel and, if I’m not careful, I might find my face against the ground, my hands braced beside me.

Is Jay Z’s New All-Pinot Champagne Worth $760 a Bottle?
Rapper Jay Z’s latest venture, an all-pinot Armand de Brignac “Ace of Spades” Champagne, will be released in October. A few tastes were doled out at Vinexpo in Bordeaux in June, but alas, Shawn Corey Carter didn’t drop by the booth as everyone hoped he would. This blanc de noirs is the brand’s most expensive and exclusive fizz yet, so when I finally sampled it last week, my first thought was: How much of the $760 price tag is for bling? Short answer: much of it.

Why you can't get a decent drink in Egypt
He pours two glasses, sniff and sip, sniff and sip. “This one is my favourite,” says David Molyneux-Berry, after uncorking a bottle of red Chateau de Granville 2014. The wine is made with grapes from Bordeaux. They are chilled and sent to Egypt for processing by the Al-Ahram Beverages Company. The flavour is certainly distinctive, complete with a lingering acidity that seems to stick to the back of the throat. “The problem is that wine doesn’t...

Bar with no alcohol fails within weeks of opening
A New Zealand bar has shut shop within weeks of opening because of one minor problem – it was alcohol free. Hotelier Grady Elliot boldly opened the country’s first dry bar last month in response to a crackdown on Auckland’s liquor licensing. TAP Bar, which charged a A$13.30 (NZ$15) entry fee and A$4.45 (NZ$5) drinks, offered late night revelers the chance to continue on partying after nightclubs closed their doors at 4am.

A Simple Fix for Drunken Driving
On Aug. 19, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration begins its annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, running for three weeks through the Labor Day weekend—a time of year when drunken-driving fatalities typically surge. Over the past generation, we’ve made important progress against “driving under the influence,” but the numbers haven’t dropped much recently, and the problem still costs some 10,000 Americans their lives each year.

At this bar, you get tipsy just by breathing
At exactly 3 o'clock on Thursday afternoon, a tall, mustachioed man in a cream tuxedo jacket emerged from a brick building behind London's Borough Market. He greeted the group of 20-somethings that had lined up behind blue velvet ropes and, one-by-one, directed us down into what seemed like a dungeon. Ominous organ music scored our descent, and the spiral staircase was nearly pitch black.
