When I went to choose my avatar I decided to just grab an image of the first thing that popped into my head. Which, for some unknown reason, was the phrase "Grape King". Apparently that's a thing, so here we are.

Kanye West. I used to be super into brooding indie and 90's alt rock almost exclusively, and Kanye represented all that was reprehensible about mainstream music to angry teenage Smackababy. But, a few years ago I started expanding my horizons when it comes to music, and god damn it if The College Dropout isn't one of my favorite albums now.

I think that's what McDonalds ideally is - cheap food where you know exactly what you're getting, so that you can very easily get a safe meal when you can't or don't want to spend a lot of time navigating local food options. Sure, it's not healthy, and definitely not something that should be a daily habit, but I'll confess I've grabbed a burger or two when driving through long dead stretches of Upstate New York.

I really like the chorizo spam. Also, diced spam pan fried and then scrambled with a couple of eggs is the perfect way to start a hung over morning.

Man I tried that once, the dentist had started drilling before the anesthesia had kicked in. I learned that I'm a total baby when it comes to mouth pain.

Actually, it wasn't even the pain so much as the heat from the drill, it made me uncomfortably conscious that someone was grinding away bits of my teeth.

I used to be a big fan of mc chris way, way back in the day, and he's got a skit about a fictional song called "Smack a Baby". Disregarding the meaning behind the words I always liked how that phrase hit my ear, so I made that my reddit username. Ever since, it's just sorta stuck as my default online handle, even though I've long since stopped listening to mc chris.

For me, reddit became a far too cynical community, and I saw that with Voat as well. The main reason I stopped using reddit was how disdainful it was of anything genuine. Especially recently, the only comments that were visible (at least in the defaults) were short, often hateful or sarcastic quips. I felt like this was changing me into a more cynical person myself, actually reducing my ability to genuinely enjoy anything outside the absolute reddit mainstream or game of the week, and I didn't like that.

I was also attracted to Snapzu's more tolerant, progressive community. There's some very loud communities on reddit and Voat that are very vocally reactionary when it comes to that kind of thing, decrying any kind of social justice or feminism, especially when it butted up against any of the hate or harassment communities. I haven't seen many accusations of SRS or SJW here, which has been nice.

So, separate-but-equal hasn't really worked out in America each time we've tried it. And, like it or not, marriage is a religious institution that's worked its way into the secular world - tax codes, family insurance coverage, hospital visitation, inheritance laws, etc, all have language specifically about marriage. It's very easy to imagine a situation in which civil unions and marriages have different rules applied, from both the government and private companies... and in fact that's the case according to GLAD.

One of the big differences is that civil unions often aren't respected state-to-state, so a couple's New Hampshire civil union wouldn't be recognized if they moved to Arkansas, and the couple would lose the benefits (notably the tax and insurance benefits) of that civil union.

Driving in upstate New York, I saw this all the time when the weather got bad. Most people had the sense to just pull over and wait it out if the snow got really bad, but everyone once in a while you'd see someone who just couldn't bring themselves to slow down no matter what... inevitably, you'd see them stuck off the road entirely at the next bend in the road.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say yes, it's absolutely at a manageable size. However, actually knocking things off has been slow the past couple of weeks, I've been as busy as a son-of-a-gun recently.

If I may get reflective for a minute, I think the biggest change in my thinking as a cultural consumer over the past few years is learning when to let stuff go from that pile without feeling guilty. Having a full-time job rather than being in college probably facilitated this change - having money but not time rather than time but not money. For example: I'm never going to beat Wasteland 2. That's ok, because even though the ending might be great and I'd probably have a good time playing it, I already got a lot of enjoyment out of it and there's so much else out there. And, by not feeling obligated to sit down and play it, I freed up the time and energy to play a few smaller games on my list, like Her Story and Endless Space. I probably won't ever watch Game of Thrones but I sure as heck am going to watch the next season of Kimmy Schmidt and read Saga.

That's always been a fantasy of mine, to have a cyborg eye like Olhado in the later Ender's Game books.
