Yep, definitely agree with all of those points. In general though, I'm happy about any advancements in the field beyond encrypting with larger size keys, so even if true homomorphic encryption is still far away, I think there are a lot of benefits gained from the pursuit itself.
You make a very good point. Like shining a light in a dark room looking for the way out. Even if you haven't found the door, you certainly know where it is not. The advancements in knowledge can still be applied anyway.
