I love the idea behind homomorphic encryption. However, its pretty much like cold fusion at this time. The math is pretty much all there, but it's not... quite... ready. Any company who actually breaks through and produces true homomorphic encryption will make a shit ton of money.
I'm really hoping that a top flight school makes it before a company. A lot better chance for the implementation to be released free of cost and patent encumbrances which might take place if a company manages to make it.
Yep, definitely agree with all of those points. In general though, I'm happy about any advancements in the field beyond encrypting with larger size keys, so even if true homomorphic encryption is still far away, I think there are a lot of benefits gained from the pursuit itself.
You make a very good point. Like shining a light in a dark room looking for the way out. Even if you haven't found the door, you certainly know where it is not. The advancements in knowledge can still be applied anyway.
