Good to see then UK High Court is just as out of touch regarding technology as the US is. Inevitable really, when the old farts deciding these issues are still getting used to the idea of indoor plumbing.
Lawmakers, in the US at least, no longer draft, or even read, most legislation. It's written by aides who work with "experts" (people affected by the legislation, who have open checkbooks for "campaign donations"). The law is then interpreted by people who have no more understanding of it than the people who voted on it. The corruption is so thick you could drown in it, and it's compounded by ignorance. A winning combination!
I've often wondered if it's because of the generation gap currently in both countries. Technology has grown so fast, backing up one generation is a huge step. So I'm not sure if they're just fucking useless and not staying abreast of things as they should logically do... or if the problem will improve with the next generation of politicians.
But I'm cynical...so I tend to think the former :P
If anything the problem will get worse given the increasing rate of technological change. The next generation of politicians could be even more out of touch than the current generation of politicians.
I think ultimately the problem is most who believe they are qualified to be an elected official of the national government are either crazy or a narcissists. Sometimes I wonder if the government would be more effective if legislators and heads of state were selected by a random lottery of a selection of people that meet the specifications for the position. But then you run into the problem of who writes the specification, but I suppose its not worth thinking too hard about it because this will never happen.
