Anonymous is building a site to kill Facebook
A new social network, backed by Anonymous, hopes to take on Facebook and the other social media giants with a commitment to privacy, security and transparency about how posts are promoted. The site, Minds.com, has the same basic options as any other social network: users send updates to their followers, who can comment or promote posts that they read. But unlike its competitors it doesn’t aim to make money from gathering data...

Your average Facebook user won't give a shit if the site is "open source" or "encrypted". This is not a reason for 99% of them to make a switch...
This was basically my first thought. And all of the business and other organizations that have put so much time into a FB brand aren't going to just jump ship. Not to say they might not transition slowly to another platform, but it's not like this (or any other) platform is just going to come along and get everyone away from FB.
Exactly. Sad but true, people just don't give a shit.
It actually looks well-designed and has some cool novel concepts, but if Google couldn't "kill the Facebook" I seriously doubt this will.
It won't, FB is too big to fail for now. The domain name minds.com is kinda neat and probably worth something though.
I would love to see even just my own social circle adopt this rather than Facebook, but that's the problem. The friends I have who are still interested in Facebook are too invested in it to leave any time soon. The friends I have who aren't interested in Facebook won't be interested in this, either.
I signed up out of wishful thinking, but I would be shocked to ever see it actually happen.
Yeah, facebook is now considered something of a utility and it will be very hard to get people to jump ship to something else.
The rewarding with reach is a genius move. FB won't die, there's too many stupid people in the world.

I try to remind my kids of this on a daily basis.
And I posted that article to my facebook. ;P
That looks pretty interesting. I don't think Facebook would ever go down, but they might lose valuable members to new sites like this one.
In the end it's all about where most of your friends are.
I can't see it going down either, but I could be wrong.
I think it's likely that Facebook will fall, but I don't see it happening at the hands of Minds.com.
Remember when Gmail rose to the top? Or Facebook itself? There will always be something better — it's just a matter of when.
You mean grandmom is going to have to learn a new social media site?!
Has anybody bit the bullet and registered to see what it's like? The article is low on details about what exactly the social network is like - I'm assuming like facebook (because of it's comparison), but the description makes it sound more like reddit (with the upvoting).
Overall I agree with everyone's comment that there really won't be any competition with facebook - I get annoyed when media attaches "this is the new ____ killer" to everything. It would be nice to see an evolution in social networking in the way that this article describes, and its always good whenever we take a step towards solving privacy concerns even if the site is small.
I created an account and poked around to see what it was like - it reminds me of facebook meets pinterest. Clean overlay, a little complicated at first, but nice to look at. It's hard to picture it without any current content....
It looks interesting, but Facebook will never die.
