    I've always wondered how accurate these forensic facial depictions were, and if this is merely artistic or scientific.

      I've seen a few of these recreations from missing persons that were later found dead and they are closer than say, a sketch artist. Not 100% though.

      It's both art and science, both because features change somewhat as you age and the recreations go on "average" skin and muscle thicknesses by race and age. People vary from average, so it's an approximation.

        I figured it wouldn't be exact, but it's definitely fascinating that they can recreate a sort of average look of a person based on the known characteristics of that time. Need to hit up some documentaries, this has peaked my interest!
