By the time the first chips roll out, bees will be extinct.

Commented in The American Bumblebee Has Vanished From Eight States
We hear a lot about how bees are disappearing, but I don't think most people know the difference between species. I had no idea there were multiple bumble bee species until I read the article.

Commented in Making honey without bees and milk without cows
Especially when pesticides and herbicides are dumped on everything. That does not make things easier for bees,or any other pollinator.

Commented in Making honey without bees and milk without cows
Also, the bigger issue about lack of bees isn't the lack of honey! It's the lack of ability to easily pollinate plants.

Commented in France Becomes The First Country To Ban All Five Pesticides Linked To Bee Deaths
This is great news.
Just a remark. One biologist recently noted, that while many people think it is about honeybees, it's not. Honeybees make money to humans, and that's why they are fine and thriving, humans look after them.
The bees in this case are ground bees and other, often solitary (non-hive) bees.

Commented in Native bee species could be 'wiped out' as Asian hornets spread across UK, conservationists warn
Fun fact: Japanese honey bees have their own defence mechanism against wasps that invade their territory. They surround the invader in the hundreds and vibrate their flight muscles violently, increasing the temperature to 115F and raising the carbon dioxide level hugely - slowly cooking and asphyxiating the invading wasp to death.
Of course, other honey bees don't have such a defense mechanism and are easy prey for a pack of hornets.

Commented in Walmart has hinted that it's building crop-pollinating robot bees
I don't know how to feel about this. I mean, on on side I feel wow, how cool, I love technology evolution and the good cause, but on the other side I'm feeling pretty sad thinking at the actual living bees that are struggling with survival...

Commented in There’s Now Very Strong Evidence We Really Are Killing Our Bees
Insecticides are killing bees, which are insects, which is the point of insecticides. I just can't believe that this question has been dragged on for so long.

Commented in Cherimoya from seed
This tree only flowers once a year, but my brother's cherimoya had a rough dormancy - had some dieback and was slow to push new growth - so his is just starting to flower. Mine won't flower again until March.
Unfortunately the flowers are pretty unspectacular; they attract beetles, not bees and hummingbirds. The fruit is where all the goodness is. Plus there's satisfaction in saying I can grow a rare tropical fruit tree in a very unusual location.

Commented in Elephant Beehive Fence
Sorry about that! I have a staff who's mother used to keep bees. She said they were a lot of work. They had to keep cleaning the hives.

Commented in Night-blooming cereus cacti [OC]
Just looked it up and it looks like you're right, it would have been either bats or moths. It would have been interesting to watch that happen!
But also I know this morning when I was out there, there were definitely some bees and smaller little insects that were able to get into the flowers before they closed up.

Commented in The Death Of Bees Explained – Parasites, Poison and Humans
Keep the bees alive people! :D
Honeybees usually don't sting anyone unless they are a major threat to their colony. You can even pet them! Reducing the use of pesticides and planting flowers are a great way to help our little friends survive! :D

Commented in Ellen Pao: Vast Majority of Users Don't Actually Care About Drama
I think we are seeing the difference between internet user interaction and BRANDED internet user interaction. There's so much that comes to mind when you say the word 4chan, or Reddit, some of which includes previous experiences on those sites or even broader stereotypes that have developed over the years. On one hand we have come to a point where the user has had enough disrespect and is willing to acknowledge the amount of disconnect between the mods and the CEOs, blah blah. On the other, the majority of Redditors don't give a damn about what a CEO has to say. The point behind these sites is the interaction and the feeling we get from those interactions. Whether it be laughing or thinking about a debate you had later on while washing the dishes. These things stick with us throughout the day and a CEO is not going to make that experience better, or even boost monetization. That experience can't be improved, it can only be moderated. Essentially, the internet is a wild colony of bees that is willing to move to a new hive if it feels like their hive has been hijacked and transformed into a corporate machine. Something something bee metaphors.

Commented in Burt's Bees co-founder dies at 80
Aw man, I've been using his Bees for so long that I feel like I know him. I once kept a single tube for seven months in Afghanistan without losing it and it kept my lips in good health in the worst conditions.
