Why the singularity will not happen
Those who want a prediction for our future as a species that is both positive and plausible often turn to the term “singularity.” This refers to a moment when our technology reaches such an advanced stage that it changes human nature and magically creates a new Utopia from our wiser, more advanced selves. Technologies commonly mentioned include human biological enhancement, artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces and transhumanism. But how likely is this singularity, given larger tren

The author reminds me of those people in the early 1900's trying to predict and illustrate how we would live in the year 2000. Using only the technology available at that point as a reference marker to what is to come. Sadly human imagination failed to predict even the most basic of technological advancements that we enjoy today, all because progress is not made by huge unimaginable leaps in technology but rather thousands of small iterations in thousands of different fields of research.
Technology advances on top of other technology, so naturally the speed of progress will only speed up. Economical trends have nothing to do with this.
Yep, but we wont be reaching the type of singularity that Kurzweil predicts, that sort of advancement is overhyped.
What makes you so sure? If you conjured a portal to the mid 1970's and brought in someone specced in technology and showed him what we have in 2014, he would be blown away. Tech builds on tech, the speed of progression will only get more drastic.
The world doesn't work that way. Things do change but it happens gradually, people need time to adjust to new stuff before additional things can be invented and publicly acceptable. A good example is the car industry, rarely do futuristic looking concept cars look even remotely similar when it comes to actual releases. Its a nice idea and all, but unless the general public accepts and supports a lot of these changes, they wont have a widespread effect.
I disagree, people today are a lot more open minded compared to 100 yaers ago.
Where are my flying cars already then!
What if they never come?
