Would parmesan by any other name be as tasty atop your pasta? A ripening trade battle might put that to the test. As part of trade talks, the European Union wants to ban the use of European names like parmesan, feta and gruyere on cheese made in the United States.

I think it's dumb, but I wouldn't care. It's like comparing sparkling wine to champagne. Champagne is a sparkling wine, but it's made in Champagne, France. That's why it is called champagne. You can get good sparkling wine outside of Champagne. Same goes with specific types of whiskey (e.g., Bourbon, Scotch). The thing is, you can make a replica of Scotch, champagne, Parmesan, etc anywhere else in the world, and it can still be top quality. So call it "Parmesan-style American ripoff cheese product" for all I care. The quality of the product will sell it, not the name.
