This is why they're against full citizenship and just as cynically why the Democrats are for it. Politics in a democracy never has to do with principles. It always has to do with chances for re-election.
I think you're describing politics in general. Self preservation is one of the strongest if not the strongest human instincts we have, so in general we are doomed from the start.
