    Why do we leave our defunct satellites in orbit anyway? Didn't scientists consider from the very beginning that our atmosphere would eventually be overcrowded by useless space junk?

      I'm going with money. That seems to be the answer whenever the government is involved.

      Also, accidents - satellites running into each other for example. There's no way to de-orbit a destroyed or failed satellite. Or those jerks that shot that one satellite with a missile.
