My initial reaction was: Cool, and?

The problem with reporting every little thing Trump does is fatigue will set in. I just saw several different Reddit posts all about this story and couldn't be arsed to read one because it's all minutiae designed to get people salivating. Trump being the only one not signing onto the Paris Treaty is news but that'll be long forgotten because a story about him using a golf cart will distract people as it'll be something people joke about instead of discussing real issues.

They're saying 19 confirmed dead. So tragic. I'm watching a few different places with live updates but pretty much disregard anything unless it come from the Greater Manchester Police Twitter account. I'm not saying the unnamed US officials are wrong in their assertions but I'll take the word of the people who are there on the ground.

I think to some extent it's more that society is broken and social media has grown to the point that it's easier for that to be displayed. I've been on the internet since the days your ISP would send a floppy disc with IE, Netscape, Outlook and an FTP program when you signed up and the kind of behaviour on display now is the same as what would happen on bulletin boards and Usenet. The only difference now is the exponential growth of people online, the ease of which posting stuff can be done and media attention paid to it.

Aye, my reply was a little tongue-in-cheek. There are all these organisations out there to help but obesity still exists which isn't to say these organisations shouldn't exist. The problem may be much worse without them so giving sites like Insite an opportunity to make a difference, however slight, is a step forward in lessening the opioid problem.

I'd say it's doing a significant enough amount of good that the Canadian government looks to be going ahead with another 19 sites of this type. Hopefully having that many can stem the tide of addiction and help reduce the crisis.

Ha, you quoted the part I was about to. If there were a place which offered the morbidly obese food with more nutrition and the chance to get into a program to lose weight plus also had research showing the kinds of place had success then I'd support them too.

I think the aim to make it safer and offer alternatives to get people off the opioids is a good one. If they can save lives by not only offering a safe environment but by replacing the drugs with a safer alternative and getting help for addicts then I wish them success.

"And there's a good chance that with these new observations we'll finally be able to solve this puzzle at last."

Part of me hopes not. It's mysteries like this which keeps my childlike fascination with the unknown at the forefront.

The whole thing is terrifying. It's sad to watch from afar the stuff going on in my homeland. Hopefully there's enough resistance from the tech companies themselves to fight this and the threats of sanctions regimes only bolster their will to fight.

I couldn't understand people getting all worked up about stuff on Usenet 15 years ago (though I did have fun working them up) and still don't know how people get so upset by online stuff now. It all seems so pointless.

Yup. I'm an Englishman in Canada who views this all a light entertainment so have nothing vested in this but, good grief, with all the crap that comes out every day there must be one person with one piece of unequivocal proof to bring him down that will bring this shit show to an end.

Just looked at /r/outoftheloop and saw what is going on. It certainly seems they're a wee bit upset.

Edward Snowden set the bar for me when it comes to this kind of stuff. He produced the documents and put his name out there. When I read this latest thing, I just filed it with the rest of the bullshit that is coming out lately. I'll gladly accept an anonymous source who provides verifiable documentation but until then it's just a bunch of "reports" from "officials familiar with the matter" so I'll disregard it all as nonsense until someone fronts up and produces something concrete. If Trump is as dangerous as he seems then it should be easy for someone to provide something of substance.

I wonder how the consistency of what is being drilled through here compares to what would be drilled through on Mars and if this is is a trial run of the technology ahead of being implemented if the Mars journey is accomplished.

I'd be interested to try this new OS on my Chromebook. There were computers with equivalent prices to the cheaper Chromebooks announced with articles about them on the same site as this article which I found kinda funny given the tone of this one. With the seemingly never ending wait for the Play Store on my Acer I'd like to see what Microsoft have to offer.

"When we use sarcasm, you would never in real life say ‘sarcasm,’” Kapogianni says. But when people mark their sarcastic tweets with hashtags or emoji, “they make it absolutely explicit, which sort of goes against this general idea that sarcasm is always implicit.”

As someone who is inherently sarcastic, I find this part to be why I view the /s thing to be completely pointless when people use it.

If they'd have released it as a limited edition I'd have tried a little harder to get one. It's a shame it's done already.
