Humans kill and hurt each other, and to think we wouldn't because "we're all humans and shoul get along" is naive at best. Your anecdotes are just that, anecdotes. Sure, F1 gets along, but what about the prevalent racism in Great Britain? What about the shootings in the U.S.? How about the myriad of violence across Brazil or the countless brawls, gang wars, shootings, assaults, sexual crimes, and robberies going on right now?
Face it, this isn't a government thing, it's a human thing, and if having more weapons keeps you from being attacked, then that's the game you have to play, or you die very quickly.
