If current laws remained generally unchanged, federal debt held by the public would exceed 100 percent of GDP by 2040...

So if government doesn't change anything in the next 25 years, debt will exceed GDP. Can Republicans continue to obstruct that long?

They're probably the only people who can match the Democrats in stubbornness and stupidity, so probably yes, they can.

One party has consistently proposed budgets that would eliminate the deficit and pay down the debt in ten years while preserving public assistance programs and not increasing tax burdens on the poor or middle class. The other party's grand plan requires fifty years to do the same thing except also eliminating public programs and increasing burdens on everyone but the rich.

But TIL they're equally stubborn and stupid.

I'd love to see where you're getting those numbers from.

Not that these outcomes are new to the last five years.
