That would be much better, yes.
But users who don't understand technology don't like going through all that, so someone at MS probably called it a win-win with "convenience" and data collection.

That "telemetry shit" can be turned off if you don't want the features it's needed for. They included it because a lot of users want things like personalized search suggestions and useful auto-correct, which require data collection and analysis. MS also included data collection to help their developers detect issues with the OS and write patches accordingly, but that's been a part of Windows for a long, long time.

Long before that, it will help reduce staffing costs at big retail stores. Lost in the store? Pull out your phone and get directions to any product on the floor or to the exit, checkout, restrooms, etc.

13 accidents in 1.8 million vehicle miles isn't really that odd. It takes many drivers 10-20 years to drive 0.2 million (200k) miles, and this accident rate corresponds to about 1.5 accidents over that amount of driving [see note]. That's really not "a lot of accidents."
--
[note] For example, I drive a 12-year-old car with ~160k miles on it, including quite a few road trips and 10-25 mile commutes. Google's accident rate would be equivalent to no more than 1 (minor) incident per decade for me with other drivers being at fault every time.

I wonder if he even had it turned on. But still, it sounds like he made the best impression he could. Dude's got style.

Wow. That almost sounds like how I've seen local governments in the rural USA treat infrastructure. Designed for 30 years? Use it for 60-70 and don't apply for funding to fix/upgrade until it fails completely.
