I think the taxi industry is a great spot for these. While you always have ever changing conditions with weather, construction, pedestrians and other traffic, imagine being able to tune the driving to one city. Your fleet operates in 1 city with 1 set of laws and driving character and etiquette. You could even fine tune it for certain intersections.

Imagine a few different strategically placed hubs where a small number of employees work. The cabs, when low on fuel, find their way home to be cleaned, inspected and fueled (or charged). Algorithms already estimated when it would need to refuel so it intelligently worked its way back toward base, taking fares along the way. It was able to do this because the people who hailed the cabs on their smartphones have to give a destination as well.

Employees at a central hub monitors interior and exterior cameras on the cabs, sensor data etc.

Fares can be booked by smartphone or calling a call center that enters the fares into the same computer system that dispatches the cabs.

True. Surely it's less dense than buildings, trees and the fact that 50k watts doesn't mean much when you don't have line of sight (Earth curvature) which is, even with the some of the highest towers is only 63 miles.

Would be interesting to do the math on the density comparison though.

I wasn't onboard with the comparisons to Hitler though, I would haved liked if we could keep the comparing of a CEO of a tech company to a genocidal dictator to a minimum, but I wasn't her biggest fan either.

Well that had to happen. It's a law.

Well if there was nothing between your car and the radio station, you wouldn't have a problem either.

Edit: It seems the satellites they are using to communicate are on the Earth's surface, so there is atmosphere in the way. But still the dishes are pretty big compared to your car antenna.

Okay yeah that's right I have noticed that. However, even if you don't like the video, as far as I understand, it's not reason to downvote. So if it's really bad, troll, hate, spam etc, is it too much to ask to pop in the comments and downvote?

I could see this backfiring if more spam accounts pop up, but if downvoting requires some effort and an account is being downvoted quite a bit, it should be flagged for admin review.

The top 10% have had increases. The rest have decreased.

So the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer.

It cannot sustain. See this TED talk by Nick Hanauer

Thanks for the information. In case you didn't see my idea over in one of the /ideas threads:

What if the downvote button was only available inside the snap itself. It wouldn't prevent legitimate downvoting, but it would prevent people from just downvoting from the frontpage.

If you're going to downvote, you should at least look inside the snap in case there is more information, related links or relevant comments.

Already you can't click through to an article without going to the snap first anyway (unless I'm missing something).

    Thoughts?

Every day's better than the next!

When asked how it's going. Say it somewhat enthusiastically and the person will think it's a positive, when in fact it's stating that every day is getting worse.

Interesting. But to anyone debating whether or not counting calories could help them: try it.

As soon as you start having to add calories for every bite you take, laziness takes over and it's not worth figuring out how many calories are in a handful of nut mix sitting out on the counter. It's easier to just not grab a handful. Then you end up eating and snacking less and end up losing weight.

Once you add in a food tracker that tracks things like protein and vitamins, it gets even better. You start noticing that you need to eat less salt; more protein etc and you start choosing better foods.

At the end of the day, if you have the discipline to track, eating better will come easy, which will make the initial 10-20 lbs super easy to lose.

I found the article weak and was going to post a bunch of questions and try to poke holes but then I watched the related John Oliver video posted and it answered all my questions. I'd highly recommend the video.

I'm on my first system. It's a Wink Hub with Quirky+GE Tripper door/window sensors and a couple of GE Link Bulbs and a pair of Pivot Power Genius power strips.

I love tech and I own a home, but the reason I started looking into it seriously was because our garage door was left open a few nights, even though my wife swore she shut it. The Wink system logs open/close times on all of our doors and allows us to set custom notifications.

The Wink system is not for home security, it even says so on their site. It requires an Internet connection to do anything. So if your Internet is down, you won't be able to control lights or be notified of events. This isn't really a problem for me as I have a reliable connection and don't use it for security (I now use a reputable security vendor for that).

It has been unreliable at times but all-in-all it's been fun and proven useful.

Smart home devices could put you in danger

Your smart home devices may not be keeping you as safe as you think... “There’s no industry standard and there’s is no way to tell if a product is secure or not if you are the average Joe. That is a big problem and it’s a problem that the industry needs to address and is thinking about.”

You're probably right. However, imagine if (and it's a big if) the new technology used the best parts of all the sites and now you have 5 different sites' users all combined. Isn't it better from a dating perspective to have everyone available to you for the best match possible? Sorry I'm not being very convincing here but I think you get my point.
