Yes, a sense of community, of belonging, participation, this is what is lacking in a lot of different parts of society. People are retreating and becoming isolated and feeling useless.
Here's an interesting tidbit on the Arab stats...Syria has a lower suicide rate that the US....far, far lower....now that is amazing. I think when you live close to death, and death chases you at every turn, you learn how to appreciate being alive, more than anything else.
