The best story I've heard about the origin of the word was during medieval times a kingdom had legalized prostitution but the prostitutes had to have a license. The kingdom issued licenses stating “Fornication Under Consent of the King”, and the abbreviation eventually became an insult. I have no idea if it is true but I always found it a fun story.
