Hmz. It's a shame they changed it, because when it is scientifically proven that Leif discovered it, they were in the wrong with suing Morrison. It's thanks to those kind of things we are kept away from tonnes of knowledge and culture.
Well, they did change it in the song he sung, and as a little kid, I was taught that the Vikings, or whatever they were, discovered America first....and I have to tell ya, I was taught by nuns in a Catholic school. Looking back, they were incredibly progressive in a very conservative environment. As were my parents.
I went to highschool during the cold war, so of course Columbus discovered America in my view for years. It is thanks to the early internet that I have learned otherwise (IRC was always a good, sometimes educational ;-), starting point of surfing). My primary school was protestant in a very strict setting. Had once a presentation about the universe and starsystems and was not allowed to talk about life elsewhere in the universe. I drew a comic of a Martian on the schoolboard with a big sign trough it, like a traffic sign, with the text that Martians don't exist, which was to me closer to the truth than writing that there is no life elsewhere in the universe. While writing this I realise I was eleven or twelve at that time. Teachers always liked me. :-)
I could only read books, these things that we talk to each other now, well we called them pen pals. It was a big thing to actually write something, then fold it up, put an address on the envelope, lick it closed and then lick the stamp....and wait for a response.
I remember that time. My longtime penpal was a cousin (my father and his are twins). Still an email once in a while nowadays, mostly short messages. "evolution"
Sure thing, my friend. :-) Was just remeniscing about those letters. Last time I wrote a letter was seven or eight years ago. To the girlfriend I had at that time. Including a touch of after shave, of course. Old school style. Not entirely, I must admit. I first wrote it on the computer, edited it for a day or two and then wrote it by hand again. Human printers are slow. The trouble a man goes through. Hahahahaha :-) The best letter I ever got, was from my then best friend forever at age six, just before I moved to another province (and most likely never would, and did, see him again). He was the son of a beekeeper and it was loads of fun being there. So much to learn and taste! :-) Anyway, the day before I moved he gave a wooden handcut sailingboat with the letter in it. I have kept it for a long time, but lost it when I moved out for an attempt at being an adult. :-/
