PG-13 movies are now more violent than R-rated '80s flicks -study
PG-13 movies today — such as “The Hunger Games” or “The Avengers” — contain more violence than the R-rated films of the 1980s, according to a new report published today in the journal Pediatrics. In particular, gun violence in PG-13 films has tripled since 1985, the year the PG-13 rating was first introduced. And overall, violence in movies has nearly quadrupled since the 1950s.

Not only are they more violent, but they have less plot! The trends in Hollywood are similar to the general trends in American society: less substance, more sensationalism. As a former cinema manager and projectionist, I have been increasingly disappointed with each year's releases. At this point, I pretty much only bother with the summer block-buster comic-book movies; and I only watch them because they remind me of being a kid.
Your're absolutely right, I noticed this same trend happen for video games. Companies spend a lot more on graphics when they should be spending time on game mechanics and story line.
