    I can tell you, from experience, these things are never obvious to people who live through them, and they’ll actually call you paranoid or a conspiracy theorist for bringing them up. In Venezuela we have a saying for this, “no, vale, yo no creo”, which roughly translates to “no, man, I don’t think so”, but really means more than that. It represents the disbelief that things can actually go to hell so badly when you’re in a society where everything works reasonably well. But they can. Look at Venezuela.
