Easy: corporate publishers lobbying for obsolete copyright laws that give them all the profit while contributing nothing to the creation and very little to the distribution of the content.
Nearly all of our society's problems can be traced back to government corruption by billionaries and corporations.
Well said..And even if people rose up and offed them,others would just take their place,rinse and repeat..Although what France did way back when was not a bad idea.

The real solution is what Alexandra Elbaykan (❤️) is doing with Sci-Hub. This is what Aaron Swartz (RIP) tried to do but he was in the wrong country and the corporate plutocracy got to him. Hopefully Kazakhstan is a safer place.
