Amazon website goes down for 40 minutes, costing the company $5 million
Amazon.com’s website went down around 1 p.m. Pacific time today for as much as 45 minutes due to unknown causes.

Technically Amazon didn't really lose $5 million, since all the people that would have bought something probably waited around and came back soon after it went back up. After it was back up, they probably had a higher than normal traffic stats.
