'Extinct' tortoises found alive and well in the Galapagos Islands
A species of giant tortoise believed to have gone extinct more than 100 years ago has been spotted in the Galapagos Islands. Ecuador's environment minister Marcelo Mata made the announcement that an adult female Fernandina Giant Tortoise had been discovered. Many species of giant tortoises were over-hunted for their meat by European and other colonists who travelled to the Galapagos archipelago.
