    334 years? I mean, really, who is going to last 334 years. May as well just give him life, it'd be easier, and you wouldn't seem like overkill as much

      That's why they do it that way. Giving someone consecutive life sentences means that even if the first one is commuted there's still the second one to serve. It's a message to other courts and prison officials that this person is intended to stay in jail and never be released.
