Lake-Effect Snow Pummels New York, Closes Thruway
Parts of New York are measuring the season's first big snowfall in feet, rather than inches, as nearly 3 feet blanketed the Buffalo area Tuesday, forcing the closure of a 105-mile stretch of the state Thruway. The Thruway Authority says white-out conditions have closed Interstate 90.

Not even a blizzard can stop some people from carving out a killer wave, brah. Even for Buffalo, This Storm’s One For the Books
Anyone who’s grown up in Buffalo or even spent a few years here has stories of the big ones. Lots of us remember the Blizzard of ‘77 with drifts so high kids sledded off rooftops, and there was the 2006 “October Surprise” that flattened trees and killed power for a week.

What's Up With That: The Dark Days of Winter Bum You Out
I admit, I like dark, stormy skies, and even nippy winter weather. But every winter I get absolutely ruined by the season’s truncated hours of sunshine. I wake up and leave for work before the sun rises, spend all day staring wistfully out the window, then trudge home under dusky skies. Even if I do make it outside, the light I crave is being blocked by endless gray clouds.

The Cost of Winter Running
Gym fatigue, an old injury that makes running on a treadmill awkward, and a general preference for the great outdoors led me to cancel my Planet Fitness membership this year (making me $10 richer every month), which means I’ll be doing all my running outside this winter. The catch here is that I live in Alaska, a place not exactly known for its mild winters, snow-free streets, or, you know, daylight.

One Dead And 15,000 Stranded In French Alps
Around 15,000 vehicles are stuck in the French Alps as heavy snow blankets roads leading to the region's popular ski resorts. The snow and ice hit as holidaymakers travelled to and from ski resorts in the Savoie region in southeastern France. Authorities have set up shelters in 12 towns to cope with the number of travellers forced to leave their cars. The freezing conditions caused the death of a 27-year-old man whose car slid into a ravine in the...
