Transgender People Will Be Allowed to Serve Openly in Military
Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter on Thursday removed one of the final barriers to military service by lifting the Pentagon’s ban on transgender people serving openly in the armed forces. The decision pushes forward a transformation of the military that Mr. Carter has accelerated in the last year with the opening of all combat roles to women and the appointment of the first openly gay Army secretary.

Canada to introduce new laws against transgender discrimination
The Canadian government will introduce legislation to protect transgender Canadians from discrimination and violence, taking a firm stance on an issue that has sparked a political firestorm in the United States. On Monday, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, announced his government would table legislation to ensure “the full protection” of transgender people, following up on a promise made during the fall election campaign.

Lt. Gov. Patrick: Texas will forego federal funds over transgender bathroom policy
Texas' lieutenant governor says the state is prepared to forfeit billions of dollars in federal funding for public schools following an Obama administration directive over bathroom access for transgender students. Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Friday that Texas "will not yield to blackmail" and urged superintendents to defy the new federal guidance.

St. Pete man records himself asking to use Target women’s bathroom
A St. Petersburg man who videotaped himself going into a local Target said he was just trying to clarify the company’s bathroom policy. That video has since gone viral. It was recorded on the heels of Target’s recent announcement about its policy. “(We) welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity … Everyone deserves to feel like they belong,” Target said.

North Carolina governor says he wants bathroom law partially changed after backlash
North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) responded to a backlash against the state’s new law banning anti-discrimination protections for gay and transgender people by signing an executive order Tuesday aimed at calming the firestorm, even as he left the most controversial provisions intact. McCrory said he was expanding protections for state employees, which would prevent these workers from being fired for being gay or transgender.

Backlash grows against N Carolina's discrimination law
Eighty businesses have joined a growing backlash against a new North Carolina law ending anti-discrimination protections across the state. Bank of America, based in Charlotte, has joined dozens of major firms publicly objecting to the law. It also means transgender people must use bathrooms according to the gender on their birth certificates. Republican Governor Pat McCrory said the law was protecting privacy and based on common sense.
