2nd explosion rocks Austin hours after blast at a home kills a teen, injures a woman
A second explosion rocked Austin, Texas, hours after an earlier blast, which was apparently caused by a package left on a porch, killed a teen and injured a woman. The first blast, reported about 6:44 a.m., killed a male teenager and injured a woman in her 40s. The second explosion today injured another.

DA: Former prosecutor withheld key email in death row case
A former Harris County prosecutor withheld a key email that helped establish a clear alibi for Alfred Dewayne Brown in the high-profile murder case that eventually sent him to death row, District Attorney Kim Ogg said late Friday. Brown, now 36, spent nearly 10 years awaiting execution before his case was dismissed and he was freed in 2015. He later sued Harris County, the DA's office, the prosecutor and police officer who handled the murder case, among others.

Texas police shoot man who disarmed possible church shooter
Police in Amarillo shot an innocent man who helped foil a possible church shooting. The shooting happened shortly after 9 a.m. Feb. 14 at the Faith City Mission, a faith-based outreach organization. Police said Joshua Len Jones, 35, of Amarillo, barged into a church building at Faith City Mission, pulled out a gun and was holding about 100 congregants and church staff hostage. In the time between when police were dispatched and when officers arrived, a handful of churchgoers wrestled Jones to the ground. One of the congregants was able to grab Jones' gun.

Denton aims to become second 'all renewable' city in Texas by 2020
Denton is set to become the second city in Texas to use 100 percent renewable energy. Denton’s City Council voted 6-1 on Feb. 6 to approve an amendment to the Renewable Denton Plan which institutes the new goal with a target year of 2020. The plan’s original goal was to use 70 percent renewable energy by then. The city’s utility company, Denton Municipal Electric, has determined that solar power is the city's best option for renewable energy, followed by coastal wind and then other wind energy. The city currently purchases 44 percent renewable energy.

A Texas Panhandle shelter worker who wrestled a gun away from a man holding hostages was then shot by a police officer who mistook him as the suspect. Amarillo police say they received a report Wednesday of a man holding dozens hostage in the chapel of Faith City Mission, a shelter serving the indigent and others.

40,000 pounds of avocados spill onto Texas highway
There's no use crying over spilled guacamole. About 40,000 pounds of avocados spilled onto a Texas highway Thursday after a big rig carrying them crashed and caught fire. News helicopters from ABC Dallas affiliate WFAA captured images of firefighters hosing down the 18-wheel truck, which was full of crates of avocados.

Hours before NYE party man arrested with weapons in hotel room
Police called to the Hyatt Regency Downtown off of Louisiana Street in Houston to handle a drunk guest got more than they expected. An off-duty Houston Police Department officer encountered a man who was acting erratically and belligerent. The officer called for what's been described as urgent backup around 1:30 a.m. when his attempts to subdue the man failed. Officers arrived on the scene and shortly after found several weapons and ammunition in his hotel room.

Texas is Leading the Country in Flu Cases
Texas is currently home to the largest flu outbreaks in the country, according to data collected by Walgreens. Not only is it the state with the most "flu activity," but 8 of the top 10 regional markets with the highest number of flu cases are in Texas (the other two are in Arkansas). At the moment, the San Antonio area ranks ninth in the country. The Tyler and Longeview region ranks number one.

Texas Woman Accused Of Ruining $300K Of Artwork While Drunk On First Date
Authorities say an intoxicated Dallas woman who was on a first date with a prominent Houston trial lawyer caused at least $300,000 in damage to his art collection, including two Andy Warhol paintings. Lindy Lou Layman, 29, was arrested Saturday on criminal mischief charges after her date with Anthony Buzbee. She was released on $30,000 bond. Online court records don’t list an attorney for her.

The federal government’s boldest land grab in a generation produced the first border wall — and a trail of abuse and mistakes.
The land agents started working the border between Texas and Mexico in the spring of 2007. Sometimes they were representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers. Other times they were officers from the U.S. Border Patrol, uniformed in green, guns tucked into side holsters. They visited tumbledown mobile homes and suburban houses with golf course views.
