Essential's recent update added some nifty per-app notch customization

There are really just two ways to handle a "notch" display cutout in software. Either you have content stop before it would be cut off by it, or you allow it to go all the way to the display's true edge and suffer the loss of visibility. Everyone has an opinion about which is better, but Essential just made it so we can all have our way. The Oreo 8.1 (build 141) update includes a new "Essential notch settings" that allows for per-app and global notch customization.

Fingerprint sensors are still better than facial recognition

Alongside the various Android phones I've tested, I've been using the iPhone X for about two months now. One of the most noteworthy changes to the iPhone X over previous models is the removal of the Touch ID fingerprint sensor, now replaced with a high-tech face unlock function Apple calls Face ID. Some Android phones have similar features; the OnePlus 5T, Huawei P20 Pro, and the Galaxy S9 all feature facial recognition in some form, but all maintain the fingerprint sensor, too. Why?

Don't buy the phone with the 'best camera,' buy the phone you like as a phone

If your job entails giving people on the internet buying advice about photo gear, you field a lot of questions from friends who want to make a camera purchase. It sounds corny, but we at DPR actually love these questions – it's a chance to put an otherwise somewhat useless store of knowledge to work. We get something out of the transaction too: a data point about the needs and wants of people who are actually buying cameras. It's like a pop quiz we spend 40 hours a week studying for.

Dumber phone - Less is exponentially more

Smart phones are useful, but they are also incredibly addictive, and that addiction is at the epicenter of Silicon Valley’s effort to grab an ever increasing percentage of our minds. In that a substance or behavior controls us, it becomes our master, and that just won’t do. For the humor of it, lets use this webMD post and only slightly modify key signature behaviors outlined to describe smart phone usage addiction...

Interview: Motorola President Sergio Buniac sparked Latin America success, but growth doesn't stop there

Motorola is a bigger deal than many of us realize. It holds a second-place market share position in several countries, and is extremely popular across massive markets like Brazil and India. It's even become the top unlocked phone brand in the U.S. And Motorola's new President, Sergio Buniac, thinks it can go much further — and has a proven plan to work with. I had the opportunity to sit down with Mr. Buniac for about a half hour over some espresso and pão de queijo, which really is how I aim to conduct all of my interviews going forward.

Hands-on with the RED Hydrogen One, a wildly ambitious smartphone

We just got a look at the upcoming RED Hydrogen One smartphone at an event meant for “RED Pioneers” (read: superfans). It is, without a doubt, one of the most ambitious smartphones in years from a company not named Apple, Google, or Samsung. It’s an Android phone with a 5.7-inch display and top-tier phone specs, but that description doesn’t do justice to what RED is trying to accomplish here.

Leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 9 screen protector teases new features for the device

Samsung’s Fall flagship is always the Samsung Galaxy Note series, and this year it is expected earlier than usual, to help set it up against the iPhone X successor. As far as we know it will only be a slightly refined version of the Samsung Galaxy S9, with the features in that handset adopted into the Note 8 design, but a screen protector leaked via Weibo suggests there may be slightly more to the story.

Xiaomi Mi8 first impressions: most blatant iPhoneX rip-off yet

When Xiaomi first began making smartphones in 2011, it took many design cues – on both hardware and software – from Apple, so much so that the Chinese company was dismissed as an iPhone copycat maker by Western tech sites.

As the iPhone Gets 5 Years of Support, My Galaxy S9+ is Still Behind

Apple’s WWDC took place this week, not long after Google’s I/O conference. Each company spent time announcing their planned new features as well as new APIs, new apps, and new ideas. It isn’t a stretch to say that both Android and iOS have become advanced operating systems with complete and competitive feature sets. I’ve been running Android P on my Google Pixel 2 XL, and love it or hate it, a lot has changed in small but key areas of the user experience.

Why USB-C headphones aren’t, and likely never will be, mainstream

One of the sharpest-felt pains of the current obliteration of headphone jacks from the smartphone market is the absence of a good wired alternative. Sure, every company that ditches the analog jack tells you to go wireless, but what if you don’t want another gadget that needs regular charging, or you switch devices often and don’t enjoy diagnosing Bluetooth pairing problems every day? USB-C headphones are the perfect, most logical cure for...
