The governor of North Dakota ordered protesters on Wednesday to evacuate a demonstration camp near the site of the Dakota Access Pipeline in the latest move to clear the area that has served as a base for opposition to the multibillion dollar project. Republican Doug Burgum ordered demonstrators to leave the camp located on land owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by Feb. 22, citing safety concerns that have arisen due to accelerated snowmelt and rising water levels of the nearby Cannonball River.

Social movemenSocial movements are critical agents of change that vary greatly in both tactics and popular support. Prior work shows that extreme protest tactics – actions that are highly counter-normative, disruptive, or harmful to others, including inflammatory rhetoric, blocking traffic, and damaging property – are effective for gaining publicity. However, we find across three experiments that extreme protest tactics decreased popular support for a given cause because they reduced feelings of identification with the movement.

A bill before North Dakota’s House Judiciary Committee would make wearing a mask in public illegal at most times. For months during the summer, Dakota Access Pipeline protesters used masks to conceal their identities while protesting. “If you’re going to express your First Amendment rights and you have no intention of committing a crime, then why do you need your face covered?” state Rep. Todd Porter argued during debate over the bill.

A military veteran organisation has raised more than $200,000 for a renewed campaign effort against the controversial Dakota Access oil pipeline. Veterans Stand has collected $213,500 so far to send supplies to the Standing Rock Native American reservation in North Dakota to help protesters and those who will be affected by the construction of the $3.7 billion pipeline, which would cut through four states and threaten the water supply for millions of people.

Mexicans have held massive protests against US President Donald Trump, hitting back at his anti-Mexican rhetoric and vows to make Mexico pay for a "big, beautiful" border wall between the two countries. Marches got under way on Sunday in some 20 cities across the country, including the capital, Mexico City, where thousands of people flooded a central avenue dressed in white and waving the red, white and green of the Mexican flag.

More than 250,000 Romanians demonstrated on Wednesday against a government decree decriminalizing some graft offences, seen as the biggest retreat on reforms since the country joined the European Union in 2007. Seven protesters from the environmental group Greenpeace climbed a 270-foot crane Wednesday at a construction site in downtown Washington and unfurled a "Resist" banner visible from the White House to demonstrate opposition to President Trump. Greenpeace spokesman Travis Nichols said the huge yellow and orange banner with the word "Resist" is a continuation of protests that started with Trump's inauguration last week.
