The Problem with Teaching Kids about Stranger Danger
On Saturday, The New York Times ran a thoughtful piece by Jan Hoffman about whether kids can walk to school by themselves. In the US, just 13% of kids are walking or biking to school, down from 41% in 1969. (That drop, as steep as it is, is nothing compared to what's happened in the UK: Gill Valentine found that, in 1971, 80% of British children were responsible for getting themselves to school. By 1990, that figure was just 9%.)

Twice as many children have thoughts about suicide and self-harm as 10 years ago, study says
“13 Reasons Why,” the wildly popular but controversial Netflix show about teen suicide, has touched off a debate among mental health professionals and advocates about media portrayals of suicide and what might be considered “triggering” for teen viewers. And a new study shows that those fears are justified. According to data collected from 32 children’s hospitals across the country, the number of children and teenagers with thoughts of suicide and self-harm being admitted to hospitals is more than two times that of 2008.

How To Report Daycare Child Abuse - Online / By Phone in All States
One of the biggest problems associated with child abuse at daycare is that far too many people overlook the warning signs and fail to report their suspicions. Sometimes this is because people don’t want to get involved (even though most states allow you to remain anonymous), but in other cases, it’s simply because they don’t know how to go about properly making the initial report. To help with this, we’ve taken the liberty of providing accurate information on how exactly to report child abuse and daycare licensing violations in all 50 states (plus DC).

Teenage boys joining ‘Men Going Their Own Way’
THERE’S a growing movement of men in Australia called “Men Going Their Own Way” (MGTOW). It’s an offshoot of the men’s rights movement but rather than getting stuck in and tackling issues, these guys have vowed to stay away from women, stop dating and not have children. “Essentially, MGTOW is a statement about living life your way rather than trying to make a woman happy or being a slave to cultural expectations,” one NSW member says.

Baby in a Box
A new US program is giving out cardboard bassinets to new mothers to encourage safe sleeping. Jernica Quiñones, a mother of five, was the first parent in New Jersey to get her free baby box — a portable, low-tech bassinet made of laminated cardboard. But first, she had to take an online course about safe sleeping practices, which experts say can sharply reduce the chances of sudden infant death syndrome. “Basically, you want to have the baby on the mattress, and that’s it,” she said after watching a 20-minute series of videos. The message may not be new. But health officials say it is critical to keeping babies safe.
