Nintendo Switch outsold Xbox One and PlayStation 4 again in August

Nintendo had the best-selling console once again last month, according to the industry-tracking firm The NPD Group. The hybrid handheld/home Switch system outsold Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The system has performed better than the competition in recent months likely due to Nintendo’s supply keeping up with demand.

How Switch is Fixing Nintendo's Third-Party Problem

Nintendo’s biggest announcement during its latest Direct didn’t go by unnoticed. Two major current-gen PC and console first-person shooters, Doom and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, will be making their way to Nintendo Switch. But they represent much more than a chance to fill out the Switch’s library with a genre unrepresented on the system so far.

'Travis Strikes Again' puts 15 indie titles in one Suda51 game

Nintendo went all out this week showcasing a slew of high-profile games heading to the Switch, 3DS and 2DS -- titles like Doom, Wolfenstein II and Pokemon Gold. But, just last month, Nintendo was all about indie love. That's when the company and renowned ultra-violent game director Goichi "Suda51" Suda revealed Travis Strikes Again, the third title in the No More Heroes series. And, this time around, he's brought 15 indie video game creators along for the ride.

Nintendo hid a copy of the NES game 'Golf' on every Switch

In the long history of weird Nintendo moments, this one stands out. Tucked away deep within the Nintendo Switch operating system is the data for an NES original, Golf. It's playable by one or two players using Switch Joy-Cons and it even appears to support motion controls... or it would, if anyone knew how to unlock it.

'Doom’ for the Nintendo Switch feels exactly like it’s supposed to

When Nintendo announced the launch of the Switch by using footage from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, it was a surprise -- but a reasonable one. Bethesda's open-world adventure game was beloved, but old enough that a port to Nintendo's new console seemed entirely reasonable. When the company announced that it was bringing the upcoming Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and last year's Doom reboot to the Nintendo Switch, however, it gave us pause.

The Nintendo Switch can handle Doom with all its blood and guts

Nintendo announced last week that Bethesda is bringing its popular shooter games like Doom and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus to the Switch hybrid handheld and home game console. That’s a big departure for both companies, as mature-rated titles haven’t been a staple of Nintendo consoles. I went to a preview event and played the beginning of Doom on the Switch. I used a game controller to control the action, and watched it unfold on the Switch’s 6.2-inch screen. You can also plug it into a TV and watch it in 720p resolution on a TV.

Nintendo "Dramatically Over Delivered" on Switch Supply

Despite widespread Switch shortages, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has said the company "dramatically over delivered" on the console's supply at launch. Speaking to Mashable, Fils-Aime said that despite analyst predictions that the Switch would sell far less, Nintendo provided 2 million units at launch. "We actually sold through almost 2.8 million units," he continues, "so we dramatically over delivered. And yet, demand outpaces supply."

'Doom on Switch' Runs at 30FPS, Multiplayer Download is 9 GB

Playing Doom on Switch is an amazing experience, but bringing the game over from PC did mean that some elements of the visuals won't hold up in comparison to high-end machines. After reading through some of the questions and reactions to our video showing Doom in action on Nintendo's hybrid portable, I went back to Bethesda to see what else they could tell me.

Telltale considering The Walking Dead for Switch

"We're really happy about [The Complete Adventure on Switch], and we expect to see more of our games heading to Switch very soon, too. The next game you'll see [on Switch] after Minecraft may very well be the first season of Batman, as it's still fresh in the studio right now, and we expect to follow it up soon with other titles like Guardians of the Galaxy and Minecraft: Story Mode – Season Two.

3 Signs That the Switch Console Will Push Nintendo Stock Higher

Nintendo is on the comeback trail, and its outlook is more promising than at any point in the last five years. The company is finding success by branching into new business segments, with its mobile and licensing businesses increasing 450% year over year to account for roughly 6% of revenue last quarter. That's a laudable contribution for a pair of relatively new ventures, but Nintendo's console video game hardware and software sales will remain the most important performance drivers for the foreseeable future.

We asked EA to explain why you can't play FIFA 18 online against friends on Nintendo Switch

FIFA 18 came out on Nintendo Switch last week - and it didn't take long for fans to discover that you can't play against or with friends online. Our Martin wrote about this shocking omission last week, and pointed the finger of blame at Nintendo. "The Switch just doesn't have the online infrastructure in place that should be the bare minimum for any contemporary console, and FIFA 18 exposes that once again," Martin wrote.

Shovel Knight Sold More Units Out of the Gate on Nintendo Switch Than Any Other Platform

Despite being almost three years old when it hit the platform, Yacht Club Game’s popular retro 2D side-scrolling platformer, Shovel Knight, sold best out of the gate on the Nintendo Switch. As you may know, Shovel Knight first released back in June 2014 for PC, Wii U, and 3DS. Mac and Linux ports followed later that year, before the game came to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PlayStation Vita in 2015.

'The big story here is how much better it is than Nintendo’s previous consoles' - what it's really like making games for Nintendo Switch

It's been eight months since the Nintendo Switch launched. And while its 2017 lineup of games initially looked sparse, the Switch has built up plenty of momentum, with a constant string of game releases, and current and upcoming support from large developers and indies alike. Typically, Nintendo systems struggle in terms of support, for myriad reasons, but it seems the tide has turned with Switch.

Doom Switch dev says the port has been "wicked hard", wishes gamers didn't focus on tech specs over fun

Panic Button is leading the way on some big third-party ports for Switch. The studio was first assigned with the task of putting Rocket League on the platform, and is also working on Bethesda for the Doom port. Speaking with GamesRadar, Panic Button’s Adam Creighton said that for Doom, the scalable technology made the port “more straightforward than maybe it could have been.” However, it was also “wicked hard”.

Stardew Valley on the Switch proves the importance of "the magic circle"

The game’s introduction generates a calming buildup to play. There’s a bit of magic that happens as the overture gets into full swing, and you see the familiar and charming logos of the game’s creators and publisher. The pixelated valley then sweeps across the screen. The game’s logo then slowly descends from the top of the screen, coming to a gentle halt that reveals the menu. You’re already in the embrace of Stardew Valley before you even begin to play. All of these sights and sounds do an incredible job of pulling you into the game’s “magic circle.”

Zelda Breath of the Wild Is Getting a Second Wind Thanks to Switch Update

Last week, a Nintendo Switch update made it possible to share short videos of select first-party games on social media. The feature isn’t perfect, but it doesn’t matter. Right now, despite being in the middle of the autumn game season, many video game fans are talking about months-old Nintendo releases instead.
