Public in Dark Over Closure of New Mexico Solar Observatory
A New Mexico observatory aimed at unlocking the sun's secrets has been shut indefinitely by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation over an undisclosed security issue, leaving it at the center of its own mystery. The Sunspot Solar Observatory, near Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range, sits atop the Sacramento mountains in southern New Mexico. It has been closed since the FBI evacuated staff on Sept. 6.

APD: Teen shot, killed over $40 debt

Today, a legislative committee voted in favor of taxing and regulating marijuana in New Mexico. On a vote of 4-3 New Mexico State Senator Ortiz y Pino’s (D-12-Bernalillo) Senate Joint Resolution 4 (SJR4) passed the Senate Rules Committee. Senators Lopez, Ortiz y Pino, Ivey-Soto, and Steinborn all voted in favor of the resolution; Senators Papen, Moores, and Pirtle voted against.

2 students killed in shooting at New Mexico high school: Police
Two students were killed at a New Mexico high school this morning, according to the New Mexico State Police. The suspected shooter is also dead, the state police wrote on Twitter Thursday. No other injuries were reported, the state police said on Twitter, adding that "police believe there are no other credible threats to students."

A 10-year-old boy has discovered a million-year-old fossil by tripping over it while hiking in New Mexico with his family. Local media KVIA reported that Jude Sparks was exploring the region's Organ Mountains with his parents and two brothers, playing with walkie talkies, when he fell over something sticking out of the earth. They said he fell right on his face and opened his eyes to the remains of an elephant-type creature that was later identified as a million-year-old stegomastodon, an ancestor of modern elephants.
